He was a resident of Donnegal Twp in Lancaster Co., PA and listed in the will his wife, Christina, two sons John and Jacob Early (who were bequeathed the plantation) and daughters Lutey (Sutey?), Agnes Winogle and Eve Early. I recall a lot of discussion on the List some time ago regarding the Early line in Georgia, and wonder if this Jacob Early/Ehrle might be a progenitor of that line. If there are others who might be interested in this document, I could post it here. What do you suggest? On the other hand, maybe you are already aware of it. Wanda Cunningham ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 22:42:44 -0800 From: Ron Moore Subject: LWT of Jacob Early, 1777 - Lancaster Co., PA Wanda Thank you for posting that information about the Early family. As some may recall, the Earlys had quite close connections to the Mathias Mauk family of Culpeper County, VA. Joel Early moved to near where Mathias and Barbary Mauk settled in Wilks Co, GA in about 1791 and they had land dealings with him. Joel later lived in Greene Co, GA where he owned a large plantation. Joel Early was the youngest son of Jeremiah Early who appeared to be the immigrant from Ireland. He emigrated from County Donegal, Ireland in 1720 and is supposed to have settled in Virginia. He lived in Madison Co, VA where he was a wealthy landowner. He had 10 sons, all with given names which began with the letter "J". These included Jeremiah, James, Jonathan, Jacobus, Jubal, Jacob, Joab, John, Joseph and Joel who was the youngest. Joel Early had a son by the name of Peter Early who graduated from Princeton in 1792 and had a very illustrous career and ended up as Governor of Georgia. I believe that Jubal Early, son of Jeremiah was a Confederate Gereral during the Civil War, and fought in battles in Virginia. I have a genealogy on this family that supposidly traces the family back to Carbri Lifichar, an ancient Kind of Ireland who was born in about A.D. 225. I wonder if the will for the Jacob Early you found, might have been a son of this Jeremiah Early? I don't know why he had a son by the name of Jacobus and Jacob, but this is what is claimed. Why don't you put up that infomation, Wanda? Several of us had postulated a couple of years ago that MAYBE Barbary Mauk was an Early, since we never ever found her parents and the family seemed to be quite closely associated with this Early family. No one, please, put this down as fact, because this was only wild speculation without the basis for any substantial evidence. The variant spelling of of Ehrle that you located, almost sounds German doesn't it? <> ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 00:46:20 -0800 From: Ron Moore Subject: GEORGIA - GEORGE MOCK Ida That was a great find locating those estate records for George Mock. As suspected, it seems very likely, although still unconfirmed, that George Mock was the wife of Mary Mock and those children listed appeared to be his. That is really interesting that you found those records in Pulaski Co, GA. As some may recall, several months back you presented evidence that a James Mock died a homicidal death in the adjoining county of Dooly on 30 March 1833 at the hands of a William Gillmore. It seems to me that very likely this James Mock was a son of George and Mary Mock. An Arthur Mock married a Rebecca Holy 14 Mar 1839 in Pulaski Co, GA. Also an Arthur Mock murdered an Elijah Holy in July 1842 in Pulaski Co, GA. We don't know what happened to Arthur after that except that he continued to appear in census records of Pulaski County until about 1870 when he was 80 years of age. Census records indicated that Arthur was born in North Carolina in about 1790. We still have not been able to solve the dilemna of Rebecca (Holy) Mock being the same person as Rebecca Mock who was the mother of Henry Crawford Mock who were both in the 1860 US Census of Early County, GA. It appears to me that this Mary Mock who was the Administrator of the estate of George Mock is the same as the Mary Mock who left a will in Dooley County, GA in 1850 and which was presented to this list by Iva Davis Rutlege about three or four months ago. She then named legatees in the estate of Mary Mock as Rebecca Mock, Charles Clements, Susan Railey, Joel Mock, Lena Musseluhte, William L. Kelly, Jaacob Kelly. George F. Mock was the Administrator. Since this death of George Mock was before Rebecca Holy married to Arthur Mock, and Rebecca Mock is named as a legatee in the estate, it seems likely to me that she was probably a daughter of George and Mary Mock and not a daughter-in-law as I previously proposed. It is possible that this Rebecca may be a different one than the one who married Arthur Mock, but this could easily be determined by searching the 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Census to see if a Rebecca Mock appears there with Arthur. The Rebecca who was the mother of Henry Crawford Mock was in Dooly Co, GA in 1850 and in Early Co, GA in 1860. Does anyone have any idea who this George Mock was who died in Pulaski Co, GA in 1827? I am wondering if this might be the elusive George Mock who was a son of John Mock who lived and died in Reading, Berks Co, PA in 1784 and left a will naming his five sons including George who is supposed to have gone to North Carolina, but it is not certain that he was ever located there. If we could establish proof that Arthur Mock was a son of this George, then this would place the family in North Carolina in 1790 when Arthur was born. Maybe some of you have already identified him and know who this George is. It also appears that this Harmon Mock whose name appears both in Pulaski and Dekatour Co, GA also may be a son of this George Mock. It seems to me that some of our members of MOCK-GEN-L may also have him in their familiy. For those who may be researching this line, it would seem important to look for other records in Pulaski County, GA, such as deeds that might list all children and perhaps define how George was related to those mentioned in these estate papers. You found the records difficult to read and you were not able to make out all of those that were included. I am going to repost a message that was sent to MOCK-GEN-L by Pat Smith in July 1996 regarding a George Mock who was in North Carolina. Some of these may be her George Mock who went to South Carolina, but I wonder if any of these could be the George Mock who died in Pulaski Co, GA? The Cumberland County, NC records, however do appear to me to be the same George who went to South Carolina.: _____________ "I received from Marylee Cory some papers on prior research she has done. She mentions that George Mock/Mauck sold land in Orange Co., NC to Daniel Thiff in 1767. In 1762, Cumberland Co., NC, Geo Mock bought 200 Acres from Richard Thorn. 1762 & 1763 was on grand jury. 1764 was overseer of road. 1764 received land grant State of NC for 200 acres. 1765 grand jury 1765 received land grant, 640 ac 1767 on tax list 1769 sold 200 acres to Gilbert Buie and Malcom Buie 1774 Geo Mock of Province of SC sold 640 ac to Arch McDugald in Cumberland Co., NC. Do these names or references match anything else anybody else has done? It certainly does appear as if this is our George Mock of Edgefield, SC. I noticed somewhere recently that an Andrew Mock and a John Mock had applied for pension papers? I wonder if Sharon Davis has these papers? However, I have a copy of a will and estate appraisal of George Mock, deceased. It is dated Sept 1827 and has as administrator of the will, Mary Mock, his wife. According to this document, the family consisted of: Rebecca, Joel, John Linney, Polly, Susan, Ceremy, Harman and George F. Mock. They were all living with Mary at this time. These records were obtained from the Georgia Archives. Carol Mock McKinney ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 10:18:22 -0800 From: Ron Moore Subject: Re: GEORGIA - GEORGE MOCK In-Reply-To: Ida Boyce and Carol Mock McKinney I am sorry for creating more confusion with my last message, but from what Carol has now added, it seems certain that the family of George and Mary Mock have been quite well defined with the will that Carol has now put up, listing the children, and confirmed with the estate papers posted by Ida Boyce. It would appear that Arthur Mock was not a part of this family, unless for some reason, he was not included in the will. It also would appear that although there were proceedings on the will of Mary Mock reported in Dooly County, Georgia, she really died in Pulaski County. If what Carol states is true that the will of this George Mock appears to be in Jefferson County, GA where he died, this would be consistent with George Mock in the 1820 US Census of Jefferson County, GA. At that time he is listed with four boys and six girls in addition to his wife. It is not unusual for probates to be held in more than one county if the person who died may have owned property in both counties. It would also seem likely since he was the George Mock in Jefferson County, GA that he was a brother to Littleberry Mock. This is based on a message sent to MOCK-GEN-L in Feb 1996 by James R. Mock and I will copy it below: _____________________________________ From: "James R. Mock" Subject: George Mock Steve, The only info I have about George Mock comes from the book I mentioned before: The Folks From Pea Ridge by Wyley Donald Ward. He states that the Mocks moved to Georgia around 1800, initially settling in Jefferson County (GA) where Little Berry and George (his brother) participated in the 1805 Georgia land lottery. George Mock had married and was living in Jefferson County in 1820 with his wife, four sons, and six daughters. George Mock moved to Wilkerson County [should be Wilkinson] before 1827, but by 1830 both Little Berry and George Mock had moved from Wilkerson County [Wilkinson] and nothing more is known of George Mock or his family. ______________________________ (Continuation of my message from above) It would appear to me now, that these Mocks must have been in South Carolina before moving to Georgia. This is based on the fact that in the 1850 US Census of Dekalb Co, GA, Harmon Mock age 58 is listed as being born in South Carolina, so it appears the family may have been living in South Carolina at least by 1792. This would also raise serious question about which George Mock was in Orange and Cumberland Counties, North Carolina mentioned in my prior message and originally submitted by Pat Smith. There was also a message submitted some time ago by Sharon Davis who located an 1802 tax list of Jefferson County, GA naming John, George and Berry Mock and also an Abraham Mott. Maybe some who have researched South Carolina can give us a suggestion as to where this George Mock line may be picked up there. It is also possible they lived there for only a short period of time and few records may have been generated. I know that several there are researching a George Mock in SC who appears to be a different George. We are still uncertain if Arthur Mock, the gunsmith and blacksmith of Pulaski, County, GA, who was accused of homicide upon an Elijah Holly in 1842 according to the Georgia Black Book, is even related to this family, and still do not know what happened to his wife, Rebecca Holy. He is very likely the Arthur Mock listed in the 1820 US Census of Burke County, GA, and in later census records showing he was born in North Carolina. <> ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 11:55:42 -0800 From: Ron Moore Subject: GA - ARTHUR MOCK Ron, Rather than create more confusion, I am sending this message to you - if you would like to post it, ok. Signed April 20, 1875. Witnessed by JAMES LARICY, A. L. HALL, Z. T. BROWN Entered for probate August 6, 1875. Does this document answer any questions or create more???? Ida ____________________ Ida I believe this will does help to clarify some issues, and believe that this is part of crucial evidence we need to help find Arthur's possible relationship to the other Mocks in Pulaski County. It would seem from the will that he appeared to be single when he died in 1775 at the age of 85. It appears he left his entire estate to a friend and not a wife or child. So what happened to the Rebecca Holy he was married to? Did she die or divorce him? It is also possible he may have been estranged from his family. Of course many 85 year old men who are fourtunate to have lived that long, have already lost their wives. Of more importance to me is the fact that no children are mentioned in the will. There was one statement in the will that makes me wonder if he might have had children or relatives he was trying to disinherit, that was "At her death the above property is to go to her children and their children." He may have been just trying to save her additional legal work of a will later on down the line by spelling out who is to receive this property when she dies. I hope that someone will be able to look Arthur Mock up in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Census of Pulaski County, GA to see if a wife is listed for any of those years. If not, we may need to search for a divorce or a death record for Rebecca (Holy) Mock. It would also be helpful to search the probate records to see if anyone protested his will. When you go to Pulaski County, Ida, I hope you look up in the criminal court records to see if there might be an 1842 record of the homicide on Elijah Holley. Maybe Arthur got off on self defense or maybe he was found not guilty. It would be of interest to know how Elijah Holley may have been related to Arthur's wife Rebecca Holy. This might make an interesting story. It may be that the reason why no one has researched him before is that he may have died without heirs. It now seems more likely with the evidence now accumulated, that the Rebecca Mock noted in the wills of both George and Mary Mock may be a different person than the wife of Arthur Mock, but this is still not 100% certain. This would then lend support to the idea that Henry Crawford Mock, Rebecca's son, may have been illegitimate since he appears to share the same name as his mother's maiden name. It is also possible she could have married a cousin or Mock who had died by 1850 when she was found in the US Census of Dooly Co, GA. with her son, Henry. The naming of a child after a mother's maiden name is known to occur today in legitimate circumstances, but not then. There are still a couple of names that have not been reconciled between your list, and that of Carol's and that is James and Joshia. Do you believe these were children or maybe grandchildren? Carol mentions nine named in the will including his wife, and you have 12 heirs in the estate papers. It would seem likely that one of his sons may have already died and some of those named in the Pulaski County Court proceedings could have been grandchildren. To me it seemed possible that the James you mentioned may have been the James Mock who was murdered by William Gilmore in Dooly County, GA in 1833 according to the Georgia Black Book. <> ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 15:43:51 -0500 Reply-To: ida@atlcom.net From: Ida Boyce Subject: Re: GA - ARTHUR MOCK Ron, I don't seem to have an 1850 Census Index for Mock but on the 1860 Census, Arthur Mock is listed as living in Pulaski County (in fact is the only Mock in Pulaski Co.) and on the 1870 Census Arthur is listed as 80 years of age b.
