Date: Fri, 3 Jan 1997 19:44:31 -0500 From: Barbara Dittig Subject: MFH #1, 1997 Happy New Year to you all! Hope that you're all high and dry. Our daughter is head nurse for labor & delivery at the Yuba City hospital. They evacuated the town and of course, the hospital. They live in Lake Wildwood near Grass Valley and have a house full of evacuees, their kids and pets. It's nice to finally see the sun shining. Now - I'm trying to start the year out organized and "on schedule" which means, it's time to start thinking about the next issue of MFH. I've been trying to keep up with your many messages regarding various families. Just spent 2 days going over the data for the Carter Co., KY Mauks. I see I have a lot of changes to make on that family chart. Someone mentioned to Lila that she write an article on the latest findings for the MFH. How about it, Lila??? I think there are quite a few members connected or trying to connect to this family. I would also appreciate copies of any documented material. I have a copy of the will for Peter of Frederick Co, but not for son,Frederick or any of the other kids. I do have a copy of "Cox & Kin" which states that Peter Mauk who settled in KY brought with him 3 of his nephews, Parris M., Peter Commodore & Joseph.- possibly children of Henry. Do you agree with this??? Oops, Now I see that Joseph & Peter C. are sons of Samuel, who I know nothing about. SO much to learn! Lila, please let me know if you'll submit something. I'm always looking for items for the following: Letters to the Editor, Queries, New Finds, early church records, marriages, etc. I will try to include as many families from various areas as I can. If you want to send a "ready to print" item - I'll attempt to transfer it to my word processor so that it won't have to be retyped. Sometimes it works and most times it doesn't. Here is what I use: Mac - (will wait til after this issue to set up my new machine). MFH on Microsoft Word. When sending an article by e-mail, use "simple text", "ascii text". Steve, your find for Jacob of Bedford will be of interest to those working on this line. Sherman, do you have anything to add to this info???? Steve, your find for Theobald, son of John of Berks Co. is also news worthy. I look forward to your article, J.P. I'll be gone for a week starting Jan 10 and hope to get the nl going between the 17th and Feb. 1st. We'll be in Toronto the first week in Feb. volunteering at the Int. Special Olympics. Look forward to hearing from you all. Dues are coming in daily. The Alabama Census 1840 lists a William Mack as a 30-40 year old male in Covington County. Also listed are a 20-30 year old female, a 15-20 year old male, and a male less than 5 years old. There were two Covington County, Alabama land grants awarded to a William Mack. The first one was on 10/25/1854 for section 19, township 3, range 14. The second one was on 12/01/1854 for section 29, township 3, range 14. The Alabama Census 1860 list William Mock as a 57 year old male in Covington County. There are 8 children listed, but I suspect that some are his grand children, since Sara is 42 years old and the youngest baby is 10 months old. William is listed as having $750 in real estate and $7,000 in personal property. 3. Mr. Ward writes, in Early History of Covington County, Alabama 1821-1871, that in the early 1830's, William and Jacob Mock settled in the Conecuh River Community, which was along the banks of the river near the present Conecuh County Line. A Covington County Land Grant was awarded to a Jacob Mack on 11/25/1836 for section 29, township 3, range 14. This was the area around Feagin, Hart's Bridge, Simmon's Bridge and Fairfield. The Alabama Census 1840, lists a Jacob Mack in Covington County as a 15-20 year old male with a 15-20 year old female, and a female less than 5 years old. SOURCES 1. Barb ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 17:54:29 -0800 From: "by way of Ron Moore " Subject: NC, Rowan Co, NC Hannah (Walk) Mock X-cc: ElkeHall@msn.com Bob The message that follows was received from Elke Hall who has done the Walk Home Page and who has done considerable researching on the Walk line, which is confirmed to be from Culpeper Co, VA. She gives the birth date for Hanna Walk as 1772, so this would make her 40 if she married Philip Mock in 1812. She would have been age 44 when your William Henry Mock was born. This would be getting close to the menopause, but pregnancies did occur then rather commonly up until the middle or even later 40's in some cases, so your theory still could be viable. This gives a place to look for her in Illinois. That must have been an error that they moved to Missouri. They should have made the 1850 US Census, in Edwards Co, IL, so this would also give you dates and places to search for wills, probate records deeds, etc. to determine if she did in fact have children. There is a minor problem with her data that will need to be reconciled. Elke has Hannah and Philip having a son by the name of Philip who was born 30 Jan 1788 and died 15 Nov 1851. This date was before Philip's second wife Mary Magdalene had died, so it would seem unlikely to be their child. Records from Margaret Tice show that Philip Mock's son Philip, Jr was born 5 Feb 1784 and died 15 Feb 1824. I will need to research this further, but I wonder if the Philip he is referring to is not a son or grandson of Jacob Mock, who is thought to be a brother of Philip Mock. If I am not mistaken, this may be Casey Moten's line. I believe that where the confusion came here is that perhaps the Philip Mock who was born 30 Jan 1788 was sometimes referred to as Philip Mock, Jr. According to the old custom, this did not necessarily mean that his father was Philip, but was used when there was an older person with the same name living in the community who may or may not have been related. I have found some more information on your William Henry Mock that I will put up in a separate message. <> --------------------- Forwarded message: From: ElkeHall@msn.com (Elke Hall) To: RonMoore99@aol.com Date: 97-01-04 11:05:31 EST Hi Ron, John Blankenbaker (Editor of the 'Beyond Germanna' newsletter) monitored the Mock discussion group and forwarded a message to me. I am researching the Walk family, and am always interested in other cousins and fellow researchers. I have a home page: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/virginiafamilyresearch which includes our Walk line. I don't know what the question was, but somebody seemed to have asked about Johanna Walk's birthday? It was 4 April 1772, Friedberg, Rowan Co., NC. She died 27 August 1853 in Edwards Co., IL. I also have info that Hannah Walk remarried John Gladfelter (born 20 Aug. 1780, died 20 Feb. 1845 in Edwards Co., IL). They were married 17 Feb. 1824 in Friedberg. The Moravians of Friedberg kept a diary, which notes: 17 Feb. 1824 Friedberg Diary: I married the widowed Br. John Gladfelder to the widow Hanna Mack, maiden name Walk. I only have one son listed for Johanna Walk and Philip Mock: Philip, born 30 Jan. 1788. He died 15 Nov. 1851 in Davidson Co., NC and was married to Anna Rebecca Walk, born 14 Feb. 1792, died 6 Sept. 1845. They married bef. 1813, their first child was born in Jan. 1813. Johanna Walk was the daughter of Martin Walk and Elisabeth Fiscus, as was Anna Rebecca, she was their youngest daughter. My husband is descendant of Martin Walk, brother of Anna Rebecca and Johanna. Am very interested in your discussion group, can it be accessed through Maiser@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu? Elke Elkehall@msn.com ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 21:07:51 -0800 From: Ron Moore Subject: NC, Robeson C0, Henry Poindexter Mock son of William Henry Mock Bob Today, I was searchng through some old Mock records and came across something that pertains to your ancestor William Henry Mock. About 22 years ago, there was a publication called the MOCK QUARTERLY which as far as I have been able to determine, lasted only for two issues. I have copies of both of these which were sent to me by other people. This newsletter was published by a Dean Mock of Loveland, Colorado. It is not apparant who submitted this information, but there is a Genealogy called the Descendants of Henry Poindexter Mock & Julia Amanda Miller. Henry was a son of William H. Mock and Mary Ann C. Bracey. I will copy a small portion of this, but this may not be new information for you. If this is something you don't have, I would be happy to mail you a copy of these records which includes their children. "He was a Methodist minister as his father was reported to have been a circuit preachaer (one who travels around the country to several communities instead of staying with just one congregation). Henry served in the Civil War. He entered as a private on October 25th, 1864. Henry enlisted at New Market, Jefferson County, Tennessee and was honorably discharged at Knoxville, Tennessee on September 11, 1865. His Civil War papers show that he was six feet in height, having fair complexion with light hair and blue eyes. His occupation was listed before the Civil War as a farmer. He applied for pension number 53277 in Harper County, Kansas. Henry showed as his residences, North Carolina; Jefferson County, Tennessee; Lawrence County, Missouri; Ellis County and Harper County, Kansas. Henry P. Mock was the eldest of eleven children (Bible record shows initials so as we can determine in order of birth). J.D., Shadrack Holcum, Mary A, James Robert, L, Mc, and Phillip Francis Mock. SOURCES=Civil War papers, Bible Records, data from direct descendants who are holding death certificates, obituaries, census, etc. We are going to start Henry out here with a -1 as we are not certain of the order of birth of his father, William. William was born in North Carolina and his father was born in Virginia. -1=Henry Poindexter Mock Born- December 14, 1840 at Alfordsville, Robeson County, North Carolina. Died- October 9, 1919 at Anthony, Harper County, Kansas. Married- Julia Amanda Miller Daughter of Isaac Miller and Nancy A. Lamb Born- May 14, 1847 at ________, Lawrence Co, Missouri. Died- April 25, 1913 at Anthony, Harper County, Kansas. Children- Mary, Charles, Lula, William, Milinda, Alta, Levi, Harrison, Josephine and Tracy Mock." (Data then follows on the children) There is an attached family group sheet, but no indication of who may have completed it. Lists William Peter Mock (should be Henry instead of Peter?) born 18 Dec 1816 (you have 16 Dec) Maried 25 Feb 1840 in Robeson Co, NC to Mary Ana (Angelina) Cora Bracey who was born 6 Mar 1818 in Robeson Co, NC and died in 1900 in Ellis Co, KS. She was a daughter of Samuel Bracey and Susannah Trawick. It is noted that they had 11 children, but only Henry Poindexter Mock is listed and the only additional data on this is a marriage date for Julia Amanda Miller of 24 Aug 1874. It appears that William Henry Mock and Mary Ann Bracey used some unusual middle names for a couple of their children. Your ancestor through William Henry was William Asbury Mock and there was this Henry Poindexter Mock. This makes me wonder if these may have been family names. It makes me wonder if one of these could have been William Henry Mock's mother's maiden name? I have a book titled surnames listed in the 1790 United States Census, and I am not able to find an Asbury out of the 12 states that had records. There were, however, Poindexters. Three families were in Main, four in New Hampshire, 13 in Virginia and 4 in North Carolina. If it were me, I would go to the 1790 US Census Index and find out where those Poindexter families were located in North Carolina because it might lead you to his parents. If Mocks and Poindexters were both found in a common County, I would be highly suspicious until I could find some way to rule them out. If you don't come up with anything substantial, I would go to Virginia. In fact, I do have the 1790 US census of Virginia and there are Poindexters in the following three Counties: New Kent (10), Halifax (1), Mecklenburg (2). It appears that New Kent had the most in Virginia, so this is likely where they may have originated. I don't believe that any of these Virginia Counties are characteristic, however, for Mocks/Maucks, so I believe your best bet would probably be the ones in North Carolina. It is also possible that a Poindexter line may be from the Bracey side, so Braceys, Poimdexters and Mocks should all be looked for together. This book also lists other variant spellings for Poindexter to be, Pendexter, Pendextor, Pindexter, and Poindexters. I was unable to find the names of Asbury or Bracey in the 1790 US Census. Dean Mock, I believe, may be still around. He may be able to give you more details where he found those records. I am not sure I have a current address for him, but Barbara Dittig may since he was at one time, a subscriber to the Mock Family Historian. This is the Dean Mock who lives in Colorado. I believe there may be another Dean Mock that lives in Illinois. Good luck! <> ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 00:09:56 -0500 From: Bobby Mock Subject: Re: LBJ MOCK (Alabama) Barbara, sorry about the confusion in my citing. Sept 6 1845., first child born bef. 1813. 4. Johanna Walk and Anna Walk were daughter of Martin Walk and Elisabeth Fiscus. They also had a brother Martin Walk? It appears we have a son, Philip with dates unmatchable to Philip/Hannah since Philip/Mary Magdelena were still married. We have Johanna & Hannah Walk discrepancy. Were they daughter of or brother to Martin Walk … or do we have a Martin and Martin Jr? Philip Jr. appears to be married to his mothers sister? Philip Jr. was given birth by a 16 year old female? I am interested in the children of Philip Mock m. bef. 1813 to Anna Rebecca Walk. This could be a good source of parentage for William Henry if the dates are correct. Maybe John Blankenbaker could help in this discussion. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 19:23:18 -0500 From: John Blankenbaker Subject: Re: NC, Rowan Co., Hannah (Walk) Mock X-cc: ElkeHall@msn.com >Maybe John Blankenbaker could help in this discussion. John Blankenbaker has nothing that he can add to this discussion. His one contribution was to send along the name of Elke Hall. Boyce" Subject: ELIZABETH J. MOCK - DECATUR CO., GA. X-cc: lsitterd@sjvls.lib.ca.us Linda, your message regarding Elizabeth Mock who married James Douglas was forwarded to me by Ron Moore. I am answering it via the Gen List in order that info will be saved to the Archives. As Ron mentioned in his note to you, I am descended from Thomas Mock (Jr.) of Decatur Co., GA. I checked the Marriage Index for Mock Females and Elizabeth J. Mock married James A. Douglass on 19 Jan 1849 Decatur Co., GA. It appears in Book A Page 142. I do not believe that Elizabeth J. was a daughter of Thomas because he had another daughter Sophia Elizabeth who married Phillip Cloud on 9-20-1843, also in Decatur Co. Since Elizabeth and James had a son named James Harmon, I believe it is possible that maybe her father could have been Harmon. I have never been able to place Harmon in the Mock line in Decatur Co. He appears in Decatur County just prior or about the same time as Thomas so I wonder if perhaps they were cousins. I have accounted for all the children of Thomas, Sr. and he isn't one of them. Thomas Sr. only had 3 sons, Thomas, Jr., Michael and Mathias. I will continue to check my records and see if I can come up with anything that will help you. It would really have helped if she had waited until after the 1850 Census to get married.
