THE
GRIM REAPER
THE RECORD OF THE DEAD
Nicholas Mock, a Pioneer, Saxon, Farmer
The
grim reaper has mown down many lives since our last issue. His harvest is one
of lamentation and sorrow, but nevertheless, it is a harvest in accordance with
the inexorable laws of nature. The oldest victim of the scythe of the reaper is
Nicholaus Mock;É
Mock
At the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry
Rogge, 1717 Taney Street in the 89th year of his age, occurred the death of
Nicholaus Mock, a pioneer farmer of davenport township. The demise of the
almost nonogenarian occurred at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
The deceased was born on Nov 19, 1811 in
the vicinity of Muelhausen, Thuringen, in Saxony, Germany, and in 1846 came to
Davenport. He began business in this city as a wagon maker on West Second
street, between Brown and Warren streets, and in 1850 went to Hampton, Ill.,
where he remained until 1863, when he came to Davenport township, settling
several miles northeast of the city.
The survivors are John Mock, William
Mock, sons, and Emma Hoffman, Mrs. Henry Rogge and Mrs. F. Paul, of this city.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 9
a.m. at the St. Joseph's church with interment at the Holy Family cemetery.
OBITUARY
Mock
In
his 89th year, Nicholaus Mock died Tuesday afternoon at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Henry Rogge: ÉÉ. Mr. Mock was born in Saxony, Prussia in 1811,
served three years in the German army and came to Davenport in 1846ÉÉ.
Mr. Mock was married in Prussia in 1834
to Miss Elizabeth Stitz. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1834 (the
year must be an error - most likely 1884) and his wife's death occurred four
years later. Of their ten children, two died in infancy, one, a daughter died
27 years ago, and a son, Valentine, was killed in the attack upon Atlanta, GA
in the civil war. The six survivors are John Mock of Paxico, Kansas, F. William
Mock, Mrs. Rogge and mrs. F. Pahl of davenport, Mrs. G.a. Hoffmann of
Riverside, and George Mock, now in Dawson City, in the Klondike. Twenty-one grandchildren and 35 great
grandchildren complete the numerous family of living descendants of Mrs. Mock.
The
funeral will be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning, with services at St. Joseph's
church and burial in Holy Family Cemetery.
