Note:The
marriage record of John M. Mock and Caroline gives her surname as Brinson. A somewhat reliable family record chart
that has been in my family for many years gives Caroline's surname as Manning
(with no mention of a Brinson). It
also gives the name of her father as Merritt Manning . Note that John and Caroline's second child was named Merrit or
Merritt. Further research is
needed to determine whether Caroline was a Brinson by birth or a Manning who
was previously married to a Brinson.

Research notes from:

- Records available to me lead me to believe that George Mock Sr's wife's first name was Elizabeth. Micajah Phillips bought many items after George Mock Sr's. death. These were bought in
May 1792. His wife is named Elizabeth. (meaning George's wife??) George Mock
Jr. leased land he inherited from his
father to them "unter Elizabeth's death". George Mock Jr. sold this land to his
brother Benjamin 18 Mar 1806 indicating that Elizabeth had probably died. The
probable death of Elizabeth leads me to speculate that she was George Mock
Sr.'s widow. When Micajah Philip died, his will names his widow as Sally this 2
Feb 1812.
George Sr.'s will is in the
Edgefield Courthouse. He has been traced back to N.C. with proof. However, I
think he was also in Virginia (maybe even PA). There is a George Mock listed in
Lunenburg Co.,VA in 1752 (Tithe list). Many names that appeared in Edgefield SC
were also found in that area, leading me to believe this is "my" George Mock.
Pat Smith -
George Mock Sr.'s Will - In
addition to John, George, Jr., Benjamin & Abigail, beneficiaries in George's will were Joseph Prince,
Calep Niblet & Peggy Niblet and
the heirs of Jessie. Joseph Prince
is mentioned as Abigail's heir which indicates that Abigail was deceased in
1790 and was probably married to Joseph Prince.
A Reuben Rambo was also mentioned in the will but relationship is not indicated. A Lawrence
Rambo, Sr. d. 16 Jun 1782 in Edgefield
Dist. He gave 5 shillings to oldest son, Reuben Rambo, b. 1747 in PA. In 1790
Census Reuben Rambo liv3d in North Part of Orangeburg, SC and there were 8 (?)
males over age 16. Two males under 16 and 3 females. By 1800, the family
consisted of Reuben, over age 45, his wife 26-44, one son & 2 dau. 16-25
and one son 10-15. Lawrence Rambo was
in Orange Co., NC & in Cumberland Co NC at the same time as George Sr. Rambo came to SC and then moved to GA across the line
from Edgefield, not too far away. There was also a Rambo or two in the Lowndes
Co., AL census along with Benjamin Mock and all the other Mocks and Rambo's.
Was Lawrence Rambo the father, or maybe brother to George Sr's. wife?
George Mock Jr. - death at 95 yrs. from Mississippi Free Trader Vol. VIII, #51, Natchez, Wed. Aug 9, 1843. George was
a Revolutionary War Soldier, once taken prisoner by the British but made his
escape. He appears in Adams Co., MS Real & Personal Tax Roll in 1808 owning
400 acres, situated on Sandy creek.
Mr. Chas. E. Ratcliffe of Routland (Colonial Home) in
Natchez, MS has in his possession a deed for land which Geo. bought signed by
Pres. James Monroe, dated 1806. Therefore, he left SC soon after selling his
land to his brother (and probably after his mother's death. According to an
agreement found in Edgefield Courthouse, George Mock rented a plantation
situated next to his brother John, to Micajah & Elizabeth Phillips DURING
HER LIFETIME at the rate of 2 shillings per year to be paid annually. This was
70 acres. It would seem that his mother remarried since this appears to be the
land his father left to him. Agreement dated 1792. Is wife of George Mock, Sr.
then named Elizabeth?
1810 - on Tax List for Natches Dist.. 1817 - Tax rolls
in Adams Co.. 1820 - Franklin Co., MS Census. 1823, 1831, 1835, 1837 - Franklin
Co., MS tax rolls. He wrote his will in 1834 and no further records have been
found after 1837.
From Rose Miller 12/1/02 Re: George Mock, Sr. "First, let me say that I am
not descended from George Mock, Sr. My
interest is in his wife, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Mock is the d/o Richard Gregory of Berks Co., PA. Richard's will
dated 1765 mentions his dau., Elizabeth, wife of George Mack. Since a number of
other Gregory siblings migrated to SC via NC, it can be presumed that George
and Elizabeth Mack/Mock followed. I noticed in your charts that it may have
been presumed that Elizabeth might have been a Rambo. Maybe this will help you clear your record.
I have no further information on George Mock, except
to say that he and Elikzabeth were probably married in Berks Co., PA before
1765. Richard Gregory has been placed in Berks Co. as early as 1719 near Oley.
When he died he lived near Harlem and his homestgead is still in existence
today. His will is dated 18 Feb 1765. He names his wife, Margaretha
(tentatively identified as Bixby); his sons, John, David, Richard, Andrew,
Jacob, George & Christian. Also, "I do give unto mly daughters, Mary
wife of John Jones the sum of 10 pounds; to Elizabeth the wife of George Mack
the sum of 10 pounds; to Anna the wife of Joseph Betty the sum of 10 pounds; to
Margaretha the wife of Jacob Fudge the sum of 20 pounds ии" George,
Christian, Mary, Elizabeth & Margaretha all left PA and went to NC to the
Mecklenberg Co. area, as well as his daughter Hannah who married George
Bast/Bost. George, Jacob Foige (now Fudge) and George Mack (now Mock) moved on
down to Edgefiield Co., SC . Information on Jacob Fudge can be found in the
Edgefield Co. records. - Rose Miller millerrk28@msn.com
