Daniel Earl Mock Obituary
The following was
on the Mock Mailing List 11-15-02
from Annie
Whitman/Steve Patz, Blair County Coordinators.
Daniel Earl
Mock - Morrison Cove Herald, PA
1907
The following
taken from the Curryville correspondence in the Altoona Tribune is published by
request.
"Just as the curtains of night were drawn at the early
dawning of day on Monday morning, June 17, the spirit of Daniel Earl, youngest
child of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Mock, took its flight to the "home beyond:
at the age of 16 years, 11 months and 28 days.
"Two weeks previous he did his last work and came home sick
before the labors of the day were quite finished. Soon his illness developed into peritonitis and, while
everything was done that medical skill and good nursing could accomplish, yet
the hand of the stern destroyed could not be stayed and he passsed away after a
fortnight of intense suffering.
The deceased was a youth of exemplary habits, Sunday school and church
services; kind and strictly obedient to his parents and general respected and
loved by all, as far as he was known, and his early demise has cast a gloom
over the entire community.
"On Wednesday morning solemn and appropriate services were
held over his remains in the Curryville Church of the Brethern by Ministers F.
R. Zook, Geo. S. Myers and L. B. Hoover, in the presence of an audience that
filled the house to overflowing.
The interment followed in the Eablemans cemetery, with six of his boy
companions and schoolmates acting as pallbearers. Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers and two
sisters. These are J.R. Mock, who
lives on the farm, and Harry, Alice and Mary, at home."
From
Steve Lapp, written 17 Jul 1997 to Gene Andert regarding Jacob Mock who married
Catherine Poley - Several years
ago I found records for this family in SLC, in a 1946 book called "History of
Zion's or Old Organ Church, with a Record of Baptisms and Biographical Sketches
of Former Pastors, Founded by Muhlenberg in 1743" , by Rev. Charles F. Dapp,
Pastor of Zion's Church in Spring City, PA . In brief, the records reveal a John Mack/Mock married to Anna Margaretha. Son Reinhart b. 13 Apr 1761; Son Isaac b. 18 Jul 1770 and from a
later will I located for John, dau. Rosina, dau. Elizabeth, son Peter. "Mary" was wife's name in will.
Reinhart
Mock and Peter Mock may be the same named who lived in Maryland in 1790, and
Peter may be the one who moved to Bedford Co, PS @1804-1810. But this is much speculation on my
part.
The
Jacob Mock b. 1793 and married in
1813 Chester Co, PA to Catherine
Poley may descend from an old Chester Co family in St. Vincent Twp. I have census indexes for Chester Co.
Macks & Mocks and there were several Jacob Mocks in St. Vincent Twp prior
to 1850.

From
Jan Tompkins
From "A Twentieth century history and biographical record of
Crawford County, Kansas," (1905, Lewis Pub. Co., Chicago, 665 pp.) on
pages 494-495: "WILLIAM
MOCK"
"William Mock, engaged in the hay, coal,
transfer and delivery business at Cherokee, is one of the early settlers of Crawford
county, having come here in 1866, shortly after the war, in which he had
given due meed [sic] of faithful service and shown his patriotism to the
fullest extent. He is well known and esteemed in the business
circles of the town and has accomplished a great deal in the years of his
active career.
"Born in Perry county, Pennsylvania, July 28, 1838, he
spent the first nineteen years of his life in that state, where he received his
educational advantages and was
taught to work and to prize industry and faithful
diligence. In
1857 he moved west to the state of Illinois and at Aledo, Mercer County of that
state, on August 6, 1862, he enlisted in the 9th Illinois Infantry in Capt. Alexander G
Hawe's company. They were at
camp at Cairo, Illinois, and they crossed to Paducah, Kentucky. They took part in the seige and capture of Fort Donnelson, were
at Shiloh under General Richard
Oglesby, and at that battle Mr Mock was wounded in both thighs, after which he
was confined to the hospital for
three months; was at the Battle of Corinth and sometime became a part of
Sherman's army in the Atlanta campaign, participating at Chickamauga, Resaca,
Kenesaw Mountain, Big Shanty, Burnt Hickory, and other engagements. For a time he acted as guard at
the headquarters of General Dodge.
On receiving his honorable discharge he returned home to Illinois.
"Mr Mock was a
son of Samuel and Mary Ann (Brower) Mock, both
natives of Pennsylvania, and of German stock. They moved out to Illinois in 1859 and in 1866 came to
Crawford County, where the father, who was a Democrat in politics, died at the
age of 84, and the mother died at Fort Scott, aged 64. They were adherents of the
Presbyterian church. Samuel
Mock had eight children, and three other of the sons were soldiers in the Civil
War, named: Abe, of the 9th
Illinois; Jesse, also of the 9th,
who died of wounds received at Shiloh; and John, of the 5th Pennsylvania
Cavalry.
"Mr Mock, as
has been mentioned, came to Crawford County in 1866, and has since taken a
prominent part in the various affairs of the county. His
business at Cherokee is a prosperous one, and it continues to increase
under his efficient and capable management. Mr Mock is a Socialist in the political trend of his thought. He affiliates with Shiloh Post of
theGrand Army.
"He was married
at Girard, in 1874, to Miss Mary E Blurton, and they have spent a most happy
married life of 30 years.
She was a daughter of WIlliam and Lucy (Pool) Blurton, both natives of
Pennsylvania, the former of
whom, a farmer and a Democrat, died in Missouri at the age of 84, and the
latter is living in Cherokee at the age of 80. Mr and Mrs Mock have the following children: Jesse, William, Ed, Mattie,
Minnie, Florence, and Samuel, who
was killed in an accident at the age of seven."
